How to Analyze an Instagram Profile (Step by Step)

By the Pixtale Growth team · · 7 min read

Whether you are vetting an influencer, sizing up a competitor or reviewing your own account, the same handful of checks will tell you most of what you need to know. Here is the order we use.

1. Start with the basics

Note the follower count, how many accounts it follows, the total number of posts and what the bio says the account is about. A large following with very few posts, or an account following thousands of others, are both worth a closer look.

2. Measure engagement, not followers

Work out the average likes and comments on the last dozen posts and divide by followers. This gives you the engagement rate, the single most useful number for comparing accounts of different sizes.

3. Check consistency

How many times a week does the account post, and when was the last post? Accounts that post on a steady rhythm tend to hold their audience's attention better than ones that post in bursts.

4. Look at steadiness

Compare a typical post with the average. If one viral post carries most of the engagement, the account is less predictable than its average suggests. That matters a lot if you are paying for a sponsored post.

5. Read the content mix

Count reels against photos and carousels and see which earns more. Note the topics and the hashtags that keep appearing. This tells you what the account is really about, which is not always what the bio says.

6. Study the best and worst posts

Put the strongest and weakest recent posts side by side. Differences in format, timing, caption length and whether the caption asks a question usually explain most of the gap. Our guide to finding your best-performing posts goes deeper.

7. Know what you can't see

Reach, impressions, saves, shares and audience demographics are private to the account owner. Any tool that claims to show them for someone else's account is estimating. Make decisions on what is measurable.

FAQ

How many posts should I look at?

The last 12 is a good balance: recent enough to reflect the account today, large enough to smooth out one-off results.

Can I analyse a private account?
