How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- Open the video on YouTube and copy its link (Share → Copy link works on a phone).
- Paste the link in the box above and tap Get thumbnails.
- Pick a size and tap Download. The HD 1280×720 one is the sharpest.
YouTube thumbnail sizes
YouTube stores each thumbnail in several sizes. This tool shows every size that exists for the video:
| Size | Pixels | File |
|---|---|---|
| HD | 1280×720 | maxresdefault.jpg |
| Standard | 640×480 | sddefault.jpg |
| High | 480×360 | hqdefault.jpg |
| Medium | 320×180 | mqdefault.jpg |
| Small | 120×90 | default.jpg |
If you are making your own thumbnail, design it at 1280×720 (16:9) and keep the file under 2 MB, which is what YouTube asks for.
Why download thumbnails?
- Study what works. Put the thumbnails of the top videos in your niche side by side and look for patterns: faces, text size, colours, contrast.
- Plan your own. Use them as a mood board before you design your next thumbnail.
- Get your own back. Lost the original file? Download your own video's thumbnail in HD.
- Presentations and reports. Show a video in a pitch deck, client report or blog post with its real thumbnail.
What makes a thumbnail get clicks
- One clear subject, big enough to read on a phone, where most people watch.
- Three to five words at most. The title already explains; the thumbnail adds curiosity.
- Strong contrast between the subject, the text and the background.
- A face showing emotion often helps, if it fits your channel.
- Match the promise. A thumbnail that over-promises gets clicks once and loses viewers after.

FAQ
Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free?
Yes. It's free, with no login and no limit. Paste a link, pick a size and download.
What sizes can I download?
Up to five sizes: HD 1280×720, 640×480, 480×360, 320×180 and 120×90. The HD size is the one most people need for a preview or a mock-up.
Why is the HD 1280×720 thumbnail missing?
YouTube only keeps an HD thumbnail when the video was uploaded in HD or the channel uploaded a custom HD thumbnail. For older or low-quality videos, use the 640×480 size, the next best one.
Does it work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…) and you get the Short's thumbnail the same way.
Can I use a thumbnail I downloaded?
A thumbnail belongs to the channel that made it. Using it to study, compare or plan your own videos is fine. Ask the channel's owner before you reuse someone else's thumbnail in your own content.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap Download and the image is saved to your phone's downloads (Files on iPhone). You can also press and hold the preview to save it.
