What is Instagram engagement rate?
Engagement rate shows how many people react to an account's posts compared with how many followers it has. It is the quickest way to tell whether an audience is real and paying attention, which is why brands, agencies and creators check it before anything else.
This calculator uses the most common public formula, the one most media kits and brand teams use:
Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100
For example, an account with 12,400 followers that averages 380 likes and 22 comments per post has an engagement rate of (380 + 22) ÷ 12,400 × 100 = 3.24%.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
It depends mostly on account size. Smaller accounts tend to have closer relationships with followers, so a larger share of them react. As an audience grows, the share who react to any one post naturally falls. Rough ranges many analysts work with:
- Under 10K followers: about 2.5% to 5.5%
- 10K to 100K: about 1.5% to 3.5%
- 100K to 1M: about 1% to 2.5%
- Over 1M: about 0.5% to 1.8%
Treat these as a guide, not a rule. A focused community, such as a local food page in Jaipur or a niche hobby account in Manchester, will often beat a broad lifestyle account of the same size. For a deeper look, read what a good engagement rate is and how to improve it.
How to use the result
Below the usual range: check whether posting has slowed down, whether recent posts are in a format your audience ignores, or whether a burst of followers from one viral post diluted the average. Low rates can also point to inactive or bought followers.
Within the range: the account is healthy. The next gains usually come from doing more of what the best posts have in common.
Above the range: the audience is unusually engaged. If you are a brand, accounts like this are often better partners than bigger ones with weaker rates.
Engagement rate for influencer marketing
Brands in the US, UK and India increasingly look at engagement before follower count, because followers are easy to inflate and interaction is not. Before paying for a collaboration, calculate the rate on the creator's last 12 posts, ignore one-off viral posts, and compare it with the ranges above. A creator with 30K followers and 4% engagement often delivers more real attention than one with 150K and 0.8%.

FAQ
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add the average likes and average comments per post, divide by the follower count and multiply by 100. Use the last 12 posts or so for a fair average.
Is a 1% engagement rate good on Instagram?
For accounts with over 1 million followers, 1% is normal. For accounts under 10K it is low, since smaller accounts usually see 2.5% to 5.5%.
Should views or saves be included?
Public calculators use likes and comments because those are visible on any account. Saves, shares and reach are only visible to the account owner in Instagram Insights.
Why is my engagement rate dropping as I grow?
It is normal for the rate to fall as an account gets bigger, because new followers are often less attached than early ones. Compare yourself with accounts of a similar size.
