Instagram Reels vs Photos: Which Performs Better?

By the Pixtale Growth team · · 5 min read

Many creators assume reels always win. On a lot of accounts they do reach more people, but engagement is a different question, and the answer depends on your audience. Here is how to find out for your own account.

Reach and engagement are different

Reels are often shown to people who don't follow you yet, so they can bring big view counts. Photos and carousels are mostly seen by existing followers, who may be more likely to like and comment. A reel with huge views and modest likes is doing a different job from a carousel with fewer viewers and strong comments.

Compare like with like

Take your last 12 posts. Split them into reels and everything else, then compare the average likes plus comments for each group. If one group is clearly ahead across several posts, that is a real signal. If you only have one or two of a format, post a few more before deciding.

Where carousels fit

Carousels work well for step-by-step tips, comparisons and stories, because each swipe keeps people on the post. On educational and business accounts they often hold their own against reels on engagement.

What to do with the answer

Lean into the format that wins on your account, but keep testing the other one occasionally. Audiences shift. Revisit the comparison every month or so.

FAQ

Do reels get more followers?

They often reach more non-followers, which can bring new followers. Whether those people stay depends on the rest of your content.
